# Holding Stablecoins for Payroll: What Can Go Wrong

> Paying people in stablecoins introduces four failure points that a bank transfer does not have. Each one is manageable if you plan for it.

Paying contractors in stablecoins works and is routine in some industries. It fails in four specific ways, and all four are predictable.

## The recipient cannot convert

The transfer arrives and the person cannot turn it into money they can spend, because no local venue serves them or the one that does has frozen their account.

This is the most common failure and it is entirely on the receiving side. Confirm the recipient has a working conversion route before the first payment, not after.

## The network was wrong

Sent on a chain the recipient's wallet does not support. The money exists and is unreachable.

Agree the network in writing once, record it with the payment details, and change it only by agreement. [A platform that supports more than one stablecoin network](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/stablecoin) makes the agreement easy to honour from your side.

## The timing moved the value

For a recipient paid in stablecoins and spending in another currency, the exchange rate between the dollar and their currency still applies. A stable dollar is not a stable local salary.

Someone whose rent is in a weakening currency is better off; someone in a strengthening one is worse off. Decide whose risk that is and write it down.

## The records do not satisfy anyone

Payroll needs to be defensible to an accountant and to a tax authority. A list of transaction hashes is not a payroll record.

You need, per payment: the person, the gross amount, the currency of the obligation, the rate used, the date, and the resulting transfer. Produce it at the time rather than reconstructing it.

## The question that comes before all four

Is the person an employee or a contractor. Paying an employee in a non-local currency, through a non-bank rail, raises employment and tax questions that stablecoins do not answer.

Most working arrangements here are contractor relationships for good reason.

## What makes it work in practice

A single funding account that holds a working balance, a fixed network, a tested conversion route at both ends, and a monthly export that your bookkeeper can read.

[An exchange that treats stablecoins as a settlement asset](https://collectnexchange.cy/business-solutions/corporate-crypto-wallet) rather than a trading product will produce that export as a statement. [Collect & Exchange](https://collectnexchange.cy/) operating under a licence also gives you a counterparty your auditor can look up, which matters more at year end than it does in month one.
